When I was a kid, my parents bought me a Commodore 64 computer one Christmas. It was the "gift of the moment" that all the geeky kids were getting that year. Someone probably told Mom computers were the way of the future (and they were right) so she went to Radio Shack and snapped one up on behalf of Santa.
I poured over the instruction manual, typed miles of senseless code, drank 5 Mountain Dews, and missed at least one episode of Laverne & Shirley. For all that, I got my name to scroll horizontally across the screen. That was it. That was all. What a disappointment! I had a more meaningful experience in half the time with my Lite-Brite from the year before.
The Commodore went into the closet, and has never been seen again.
The Designing Begins
I moved to NYC in 1997 and got a job as an admin assistant at an internet startup. The first day on the job my supervisor was late and the girl in the cubicle next to me showed me how to surf the web. "How do I surf?" I asked. "Just start clicking buttons and pictures," was the reply.
Little did she know, she altered my life's path with that one little sentence.
Two years later I joined the firm's design department. Two years after that the internet bubble burst, and I was unemployed. I took that opportunity to start Shannon Brown Web Design.
My Clients
I started off designing sites for bands in New York City. After a few months I obtained a couple clients in the fitness arena, and then branched out into the financial industry. What followed was a wide array of projects from cookie bakers to lawyers; from authors to non-profits; from investment firms to jewelers; from small start-ups to international corporations and everything in between.
In short, I love projects of all styles and sizes. I try to listen (really listen) to what a client wants and understand their goals and style. Then I attempt to nail their designs with absolute accuracy, give them a website they are proud of, and help their business take off! I enjoy every part of the design process from brainstorming with clients, to creating designs in PhotoShop, to building sites with miles of code (didn't see that one coming!), to launching the finished product.
But at the end of the day, nothing beats hearing a client say "We just love our website!" That is the icing on the web design cake.
More than Just a Website
More than 10 years later, I think you'll agree it's not just about your website anymore. It's also about branding, marketing, social networking and engaging your customers.
So I've branched out! In addition to web design, I also handle other graphic design projects including creating logos, business cards, postcard, banner ads, email marketing templates, custom skins for social networking sites, PowerPoint presentations and about a million other design related tasks. As long as it's creative, it's all fun for me!
The "Go To" Person
One of my favorite jobs is being a web consultant to companies that have an on-going need for a designer, but may not need someone full-time on staff. This is where I really shine! I can build and maintain their website, create marketing material, keep their brand consistent across all media, and support their in-house technology team.
As a "go to" person, my clients know they have one person to contact to handle their every design need from business cards to user interface design. It saves them time and money, and gives me the chance to be part of a creative team.
In My Spare Time
Spare time? What spare time? (Just kidding...)
When I'm not sitting on my sofa with a full cup of coffee and a mouse in my hand, I can be found singing country music in honky-tonks around New York City. With the advent of Facebook, I've learned to love photography, and for over a year I have maintained two photo blogs called "Why I Love NY" and "Fashion Offenders". I play piano, read at least three books at a time, enjoy producing and attending cabaret performances, and am learning to bake the world's best biscuit.
Enough About Me
